PSL Expansion Draws Global Interest as 12 Bidders Compete for Two New Franchises

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set for a major expansion, with two new teams joining from PSL 11 onward, as around 12 bidders from five countries vie for franchise ownership. The response, described as “extraordinary” by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), underscores the league’s growing commercial appeal at home and abroad.

What’s Happening and When?

  • Initial tender results: To be announced shortly

  • Open auction: January 8, Islamabad Convention Centre

  • Expansion timeline: From PSL 11 (2026) onward

  • Franchise term: 10 years (2026–2035)

Only bidders meeting strict technical and financial criteria will advance to the open auction, as the PCB emphasizes a transparent, competitive, and internationally benchmarked process.

Who’s Bidding?

The extended deadline attracted interest from Pakistan, the United States, Australia, Canada, and the UAE. The bidder mix includes:

  • Mobile phone manufacturers

  • Solar energy companies

  • Real estate groups

  • Prominent business houses and high-net-worth individuals

Several bidders have formed consortiums, signaling long-term investment plans and the scale of capital involved.

Cities in the Frame

Successful owners may choose a city-based identity from a PCB-approved list that includes:
Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit.
Alternatively, a different city name can be proposed subject to PCB approval.

  • Name registration fee: USD 1 million (non-refundable)

  • Suffix rules: A suffix is allowed with written approval, but existing PSL suffixes (Qalandars, Kings, United, Zalmi, Gladiators, Sultans) cannot be reused.

Revenue Protection for New Owners

To de-risk early years, the PCB has guaranteed a minimum central revenue share of PKR 850 million to each incoming franchise for the first five seasons after entry. The assurance aims to support initial spending on infrastructure, branding, and squad building.

What to Expect in PSL 11

The expansion is expected to increase competitiveness, widen the league’s geographical footprint, and unlock new commercial opportunities.

Multan Sultans: An Open Question

The future of Multan Sultans remains uncertain after the franchise’s ownership was not renewed. One option under consideration is temporary PCB management for PSL 11 while a long-term solution is finalized.

Why This Matters

PSL’s expansion marks a milestone in Pakistan cricket’s evolution—proof of rising global confidence in the league’s brand, governance, and revenue model. With strong safeguards for investors and a transparent auction ahead, the coming weeks could define the next chapter of PSL’s growth.
