Alta Badia, Italy — Austrian skier Marco Schwarz made a triumphant return to the top of the podium on Sunday, claiming his first Alpine Skiing World Cup victory in nearly two years by winning the men’s giant slalom at Alta Badia.
Schwarz delivered a composed and powerful performance on the demanding Gran Risa course, posting a combined time of 2:35.02 over two runs to seal the win in front of a packed Italian crowd.
Narrow Margin, Big Moment
The 30-year-old finished just 0.18 seconds ahead of Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who came agonisingly close to securing his maiden World Cup victory. Austria’s Stefan Brennsteiner rounded out the podium in third place, just 0.22 seconds off Schwarz’s winning time.
Schwarz had led after the opening run and skied last in the second — a position that often brings intense pressure. Despite visible nerves, he held his line and pace to fend off late challengers.
Comeback After Serious Injury
Sunday’s victory carries special significance for Schwarz, who has worked his way back after a serious knee injury suffered in December 2023 that prematurely ended his season.
“This win means everything after the difficult moments I’ve been through,” Schwarz said after the race. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supported me during my recovery. This victory is for them.”
His previous World Cup win came in the slalom at Madonna di Campiglio almost two years ago, making the Alta Badia success a major milestone in his comeback journey.
Impact on World Cup Standings
With this result, Schwarz now sits second in the overall World Cup standings, though he still trails Switzerland’s Marco Odermatt by a sizeable margin. Brennsteiner’s podium finish also helped him take a narrow lead in the giant slalom discipline rankings.
Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen, a major title contender, finished outside the top ten and lost further ground in both the giant slalom and overall standings. He will look to rebound in the upcoming slalom event, where he remains a strong favourite.
Eyes on the Olympics
The timing of Schwarz’s return to winning form is particularly encouraging for Austria, with the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics drawing closer. His performance at Alta Badia suggests he is regaining both confidence and competitive sharpness at the right moment.
