Islamabad Vision 2027: Govt Plans Two-Year Development Drive After Allama Iqbal Flyover Opens

Islamabad: The federal government is preparing to roll out a comprehensive two-year development roadmap for the capital under a new initiative titled Islamabad Vision 2027, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Allama Iqbal Flyover at T-Chowk on Thursday.

The newly opened flyover, completed in just over three months, has been opened to traffic and is expected to significantly improve traffic flow at one of Islamabad’s busiest junctions, connecting GT Road with the Islamabad Expressway.

Allama Iqbal Flyover Completed Ahead of Schedule

The project, spanning 1.1 kilometres, was completed ahead of its scheduled deadline and now makes the Islamabad Expressway signal-free from Faisal Mosque up to GT Road. Although the project’s cost rose by around 15 percent, officials said the increase was due to changes in scope and improved infrastructure standards.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the Capital Development Authority (CDA), contractors, and project teams for delivering the project with speed and quality, calling it a model for future urban development initiatives.

Islamabad Vision 2027 Announced

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi formally announced Islamabad Vision 2027, a citywide development plan aimed at transforming the capital over the next two years. While detailed project lists have yet to be released, officials confirmed that multiple infrastructure, traffic management, and civic improvement schemes are in the pipeline.

According to government sources, the initiative will focus on:

More Infrastructure Projects Underway

The interior minister also revealed that work on the Shaheen Chowk underpass is nearing completion and will soon be inaugurated. Additionally, new service roads along the expressway are planned to manage light traffic, particularly in areas where existing roads are in poor condition.

Encroachment Removal and Urban Planning

During the ceremony, the prime minister highlighted the importance of sustained anti-encroachment operations, stating that illegal constructions pose long-term challenges to urban planning. He commended Islamabad’s local administration for recent actions taken near the Diplomatic Enclave and other key areas.

Water Shortage to Be Addressed

Acknowledging Islamabad’s growing water crisis, the interior minister announced that a dedicated task force is working on solutions to address the city’s widening supply gap. Currently, Islamabad faces a significant shortfall between water supply and demand, an issue that has remained unresolved for decades.

Officials indicated that addressing water scarcity will be treated as a priority under Vision 2027.

High-Level Attendance

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several federal ministers, parliamentarians, and senior officials, underscoring the government’s commitment to accelerating development in the capital.

Why This Matters

Islamabad Vision 2027 signals a renewed push toward faster infrastructure delivery, better urban management, and long-term planning. If implemented effectively, the initiative could reshape traffic flow, civic services, and overall quality of life in Pakistan’s capital.
