PIA Flight to Lahore Makes Emergency Landing in Dammam After Technical Alert

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight travelling from Jeddah to Lahore was forced to make an emergency landing at Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport after a technical alert was detected mid-air, airline officials confirmed on Friday.

Emergency Declared Mid-Flight

According to a PIA spokesperson, Flight PK-860, operated by a Boeing 777, was scheduled to arrive in Lahore at around 8:00pm. However, while still within Saudi Arabian airspace, the aircraft transmitted the emergency transponder code 7700, prompting air traffic control to prioritise the flight and guide it to the nearest suitable airport.

The aircraft was carrying 437 passengers, excluding crew members.

In aviation, a 7700 squawk code signals a general emergency, often linked to technical faults, engine concerns, or onboard medical issues, requiring immediate coordination with air traffic authorities.

Safe Landing, No Injuries Reported

The plane landed safely in Dammam, where it was received by airport emergency and engineering teams. PIA officials confirmed that all passengers remained safe, and no injuries were reported.

Engineering staff began technical inspections soon after landing. While the airline did not disclose specific details of the issue, officials said the aircraft would only resume operations after completing all mandatory safety checks.

Passenger Facilitation Under Review

PIA has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding passenger accommodation, onward travel arrangements, or revised departure timing, though the spokesperson said airline staff were coordinating with Saudi authorities to manage the situation.

Recent Context and Operational Challenges

This is not the first time PIA has faced flight disruptions linked to technical or operational challenges. In recent months, airline operations were impacted when aircraft engineers raised concerns over safety standards, spare parts availability, and salary disparities, leading to flight delays — particularly on routes to Saudi Arabia.

PIA has previously stated that it is working to modernise its fleet and strengthen maintenance protocols to improve operational reliability and passenger confidence.

Aviation Safety Protocols in Action

Aviation experts note that emergency landings, while concerning for passengers, often demonstrate that international safety systems are functioning as designed.

Declaring an emergency early and diverting to the nearest airport is a standard global aviation practice aimed at preventing risk escalation.

What Passengers Should Know

PIA is expected to issue further updates once inspections are completed and decisions regarding the flight’s continuation are finalised.
