TAIPEI: A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Taiwan late Saturday night, causing strong tremors across the island, including the capital city Taipei. Authorities have started damage assessments as residents remain on high alert.
Earthquake Details
According to Taiwan’s weather authorities, the earthquake occurred around 32 kilometers off the coast of Yilan, at a depth of 73 kilometers. Due to its strength, buildings shook in several cities, and people reported feeling the tremor in multiple regions.
The National Fire Agency confirmed that emergency teams were immediately mobilized to assess possible damage and ensure public safety. So far, no major casualties have been officially confirmed, but inspections are still ongoing.
Taiwan’s Earthquake Risk
Taiwan is located near the boundary of two major tectonic plates, making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. The island has experienced several deadly quakes in the past:
-
In 2016, a strong earthquake in southern Taiwan killed more than 100 people
-
In 1999, a 7.3 magnitude quake claimed over 2,000 lives
Because of this history, authorities routinely urge residents to remain prepared and follow safety guidelines during seismic activity.
Reminder of April 2024 Major Quake
The latest tremor comes months after Taiwan was hit by its strongest earthquake in at least 25 years in April 2024. That 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Hualien, killing nine people and injuring more than 900.
That disaster caused massive landslides, damaged roads and tunnels, and left several buildings dangerously tilted. Rescue helicopters were deployed, food supplies were air-dropped, and dozens of workers were reported missing at the time.
Authorities Urge Caution
Officials have once again advised residents to:
-
Stay alert for aftershocks
-
Follow emergency safety instructions
-
Avoid damaged buildings
-
Keep emergency kits ready
Rescue and monitoring operations continue as officials closely track the situation.
